China has become a powerful manufacturing nation. Many of the products exported around the world are assembled in China. More and more businesses are using China to manufacture products. Those students who Mandarin schools will have many opportunities in business available to them. There are also opportunities in the diplomatic service and government.
There is not a single Chinese language. Chinese is a group of languages with many dialects. Mandarin is the version of Chinese spoken the most. Approximately 900 million people have Mandarin as their native language. Cantonese is another variation of the language that is widespread. Mandarin is the official language of the People's Republic of China.
Many corporations that do business in China are seeking employees who can speak the language. Clearly, knowing the Chinese language is a qualification that employers find very attractive. This is because of the ascent of China as a major manufacturing power.
Mastering a foreign language always requires hard work. This is particularly true with the Chinese language which is unusually difficult to learn. Chinese does not use a phonetic alphabet. Instead the written language uses picture characters. Chinese has nothing in common with the romance languages such as French, Italian, and Spanish, which have some similarities to one another and with English. Asian languages are a completely different experience to Western students.
China is a country that has been in a state of dramatic transformation. Most of this very large nation is undeveloped, rural and poor. The communist government does not allow free elections, censors the press, and represses freedom of speech. Politically the nation is repressed. A form of state capitalism has formed, however, that has created an affluent middle class. Many of the rural peasants have migrated to the factories located in new manufacturing factory cities. Because of the cheap labor, many companies have moved their manufacturing facilities to China. These companies require managers who can communicate with their Chinese business partners.
Where once only a few universities offered courses in Chinese, now many colleges and even some high schools teach Chinese. Business schools in particular encourage the study of Chinese. There are more private for profit language institutes that offer Chinese classes. In general, more people find it necessary to learn the language because of the business environment.
It was not that long ago when the Chinese government restricted travel to China. Now these restrictions have been somewhat relaxed. There are more people taking trips to China. While most travel to China is for business purposes, there is an increase in tourism. There are also more academics and scientists traveling to China for educational purposes. A foreign traveler in China must be aware of the laws and the customs of this country. They are very different than in the West.
Many employment and business opportunities arise when you learn Chinese. There is a shortage of talented business people who are fluent in the language. There is a great demand for people who can communicate effectively in this language. For the student considering their future profession, taking learn new languages will open great opportunities for interesting jobs in international trade.
