Danish Furniture: A Primer
Modern Danish Furniture made its first appearance at the time of Europe’s post war revival, and instantly became the definitive expression for contemporary 20th century home furnishings. Because of its completely modern yet timeless form, this type of furniture remains very fashionable these days.
The ageless feature of Danish design is perhaps a result of the clear contours and total absence of ornamentation which identify these furnishings. Though nearly all furniture is normally dated by its artistic elements, it is the deficiency of these specific facets that makes a Jacobsen seat from the 1950s virtually identical to its current IKEA counterpart. What premiered as an avant garde design in the 50s became conspicuously visible in stylish pads in the 60s and beyond.
The primary approach to
Contemporary Dining Room Furniture design is that the form should be decided by each piece's function. That was a genuinely new notion, since the design tastes of the 19th century began with the form and subsequently modified it to the planned function of each piece. In this technique, 19th century designers developed some of the most luxuriant and utterly unpleasant furnishings ever seen. Other furniture styles like Arts and Crafts designs have also been defined by functionalism inspiring the form, yet midcentury Danish design integrated yet another factor in Danish design; the human body. In every instance where the material is meant to be in contact with people, those materials were very slightly rounded to allow for our bodies.
contemporary living room furniture makers were rather partial to using wood in their furniture. From deepest mahogany to white oak and the invariably predictable maple, this excessive use of wood quickly became a defining element of Danish design. Given that most larger pieces were formed to support the human body, quite a few benches are unpadded. Wood surfaces on Danish furnishings are practically never painted, either, and are stained and varnished using materials that allow the wood’s natural color to be visible. As a noteworthy exception, upholstered pieces including loveseats or side chairs typically have no wood to be seen. Most likely this is another way of holding ornamentation to a minimum, and the effect is undoubtedly one of simplicity. Even chairs with vibrantly colored materials have very simple forms so the pieces appear to be fabricated from a single piece of foam instead of a block of wood.
Even though Danish Furniture currently enjoys a global market, the place which purchases the biggest amount of Danish furniture pieces is Germany, which purchases just about six times the amount of furniture from Denmark as the US purchases. To provide those two countries and the rest of the globe, just about 450 companies are very engaged generating Danish-style furniture and they are providing employment for about 20,000 people.
