The year 2009 was a historic time for coin collectors because the Lincoln penny was getting a make-over for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln penny and the two hundredth anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. The obverse side (head) has no change at all, while the reverse side (tail) was entirely changed.
There are 4 variations of this Lincoln penny that will display the 4 stages of existence of Lincoln: his birth and childhood in Kentucky, his influential years in Indiana, his skilled life in Illinois, and finally his presidency in Washington.
The first design was released last February 12, 2009 in Hodgenville, Kentucky where Lincoln was brought to existence. The coin depicts of a small house where Lincoln was reared.
These pennies are circulated by the banks which receiving coins on an as-needed basis. It only means that there are banks who do not receive these coins because they are not needed, as compared to other banks. William Wood was granted a letters patent to mint the coin, and Swift saw the licensing of the patent as corrupt.
