Medical Center Gives Rural Nurses Chance To Use Skills
The University of Kansas? Medical Center has proved to be a great source for the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital's nursing staff; to experience the latest in the field. The nurses who earlier worked in rural hospitals with few or no patients now work for a short period of time in the Kansas City hospital thanks to the program started by the medical center. This will be of great benefit to both the center as well as the nurses; makes up for the shortage of nurses there, plus helping them work with cases that they may not usually see.
So far this program has been the initiative of only the 35 bed Ulysses hospital. It has about 26 nurses in all, of which 12 decided to participate. One of the most enthusiastic people to participate in this program is a 35 year old registered nurse, having spent the previous 5 years in Ulysses. In Kansas City, she usually handled patients with cases of bone marrow, liver and kidney as part of the hematology unit assigned to her. The medical center's outreach plane during its scheduled stops to western Kansas transports the nurses to Kansas City where they are housed at the medical center.
The administrator at Bob Wilson Hospital said the program has fantastic potential for his hospital staff and surrounding hospitals in southwest Kansas. It is an opportunity of a lifetime for them to work with state-of-the-art equipment and experience nursing practice at the tertiary level.
The nurses who are participating will spread their knowledge which will in turn benefit patient care by state of the art care. This is a great benefit. The director of the nursing services himself believes that program's purpose is supposed to be twofold. Along with enhancing the skill of the nurses and providing them with full time jobs, it is also helpful in filling the shortage in the medical centers.
